Rabat, Jan. 19 (SANA) Senegal clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title for the second time in their history with a 1–0 victory over hosts Morocco after extra time in Sunday’s final at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The match was goalless at the end of regulation before Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal in the 94th minute, sealing the championship for Senegal after a tense contest that stretched to 120 minutes. The team was guided to victory by head coach Pape Thiaw.
Morocco had a golden opportunity to secure the title in normal time but failed to capitalize when Ibrahim Díaz missed a penalty in the closing moments of the match.
The defeat extended Morocco’s wait for a continental title, with their last Africa Cup of Nations triumph dating back to 1976, despite the team being led by coach Walid Regragui. Senegal, meanwhile, added to their growing pedigree after previously lifting the trophy in 2021.
Earlier, Nigeria claimed third place by defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout.
