Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire advance to AFCON quarterfinals in Morocco

Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire advance to AFCON quarterfinals in Morocco

Rabat, Jan. 07 (SANA) Côte d’Ivoire advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Burkina Faso 3–0 on Tuesday in a Round of 16 match of the Africa Cup of Nations, being played across several Moroccan cities.

Amad Diallo opened the scoring in the 20th minute, followed by a second goal from Yann Diomande in the 32nd minute, before Bazoumana Touré sealed the win late in the 88th minute.

The Ivorians, who topped Group F with seven points ahead of Cameroon on goal difference, will face Egypt in the quarterfinals. Egypt secured its place after defeating Benin 3–1 after extra time.

In another Round of 16 match played earlier on Tuesday, Algeria reached the quarterfinals with a 1–0 victory after extra time over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Adel Boulbina scored the decisive goal in the 119th minute to send Algeria through. The Algerian side had earlier finished the group stage with a perfect record.

Algeria will meet Nigeria in the quarterfinals, after Nigeria defeated Mozambique 4–0.

With Côte d’Ivoire’s qualification, the quarterfinal lineup was completed. The last eight teams are Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Nigeria, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire.

Quarterfinal matches begin on Friday, with Mali facing Senegal and Cameroon meeting host nation Morocco. The remaining two matches will be played on Saturday, as Algeria take on Nigeria, followed by Egypt against Côte d’Ivoire.
