President al-Sharaa at Doha Forum: Any deal with Israel must protect Syria's interests

Doha, Dec. 6 (SANA) Speaking at a panel session at the Doha Forum 2025, President Ahmad al-Sharaa said that any agreement with Israel must safeguard Syria’s interests.

President al-Sharaa said during an open dialogue session with journalist Christiane Amanpour, that Israel is using its crises to shift the burden onto other countries and evade accountability for the massacres committed in the Gaza Strip. Israel continues to justify its policies under the pretext of security concerns, he added.

“Since liberation, Syria has sent constructive messages aimed at establishing the foundations of regional stability,” President al-Sharaa said. “Yet Israel has responded with extreme violence, launching over a thousand airstrikes and carrying out 400 incursions into Syrian territory. The most recent attack was the massacre in the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside that claimed dozens of lives.”

President al-Sharaa added that Syria is working with influential countries worldwide to pressure Israel to withdraw from the territories it occupied after December 8, 2024, noting that all nations support this demand.

The President stressed that Syria insists on Israel’s adherence to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. “The demand for a demilitarized zone raises many questions. Who will protect this zone if the Syrian army is not allowed to be present?” he asked.

President al-Sharaa said that there are negotiations with Israel, with the United States involved, and emphasized that “any agreement must ensure Syria’s interests are fully protected.”
