Damascus, Sept. 1 (SANA) Denmark has become the first Scandinavian country to reopen its embassy in Syria after a 14-year closure, a move Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani described Tuesday as an important step in Damascus’ renewed engagement with European partners.
The Danish Embassy reopened in Damascus during a visit by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, marking the restoration of Denmark’s diplomatic presence in the Syrian capital.
“It was a pleasure to welcome my friend, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, back to Damascus for a highly successful visit,” al-Shaibani said.
He described the embassy reopening as a particularly significant moment, saying it reflected growing ties between Syria and Denmark and sent a positive signal about Syria’s renewed engagement with Europe.
Al-Shaibani said talks with Rasmussen were productive and resulted in agreement on several steps to deepen bilateral relations, including beginning work toward a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement.
The proposed framework would cover agriculture, energy, aviation, investment, migration and other sectors, he said.
Al-Shaibani also expressed appreciation for Denmark’s support for Syria’s recovery and reconstruction, saying rebuilding the country was important to its long-term stability and future.
“We look forward to building on this visit and further strengthening our relationship in the months and years ahead,” he said.
