Damascus, April 27 (SANA) The trial of deposed regime officials in Syria marks a “key moment” for accountability, a UN official said Monday, as legal proceedings against senior figures get underway in Damascus.
Claudio Cordone, Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, said in a post on X: “Trial of Atef Najib, Bashar al-Assad and others is a key moment for accountability, as is the arrest of Amjad Yussef. Due process from arrest to verdict is essential for justice. Any confession belongs in court; survivors deserve justice and the full truth.”
He added that he had met Interior Minister Anas Khattab before leaving Damascus and had a good discussion on security matters and shielding Syria from conflict, stressing the importance of due process in arrest cases and support for Syria’s transitional justice process.
His remarks came as the first public hearing in the trial of former officials was held at the Palace of Justice in Damascus, with proceedings beginning in the case of Atef Najib, who faces charges related to crimes committed against Syrians.
