Moscow, Feb. 3 (SANA) Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Moscow is prepared to support Syria in addressing its economic difficulties, describing the country as a long-standing partner in the Middle East.
In written responses to media questions ahead of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s annual press conference, the ministry said Syria would require additional international support as it enters what it described as a new phase, particularly in rebuilding its economy.
The comments, reported by Russia’s TASS news agency, said Moscow intended to continue backing Syria’s leadership and population during the transition period.
The ministry added that economic cooperation was a central topic during talks in Moscow on Jan. 28 between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The discussions focused on practical measures to expand trade and strengthen economic ties, it said.
The two sides were also examining potential joint projects in sectors such as healthcare, construction and sports, as part of broader efforts to support Syria’s economic recovery, according to the ministry.
During the Kremlin meeting, the two presidents reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination and deepening bilateral relations.
