Ankara, Jan. 22 (SANA) Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday that Syrian government efforts in al-Hasakah province, northeast Syria, are aimed at consolidating public order and ensuring the security and safety of Syrian citizens.
The Anadolu Agency quoted a ministry source as saying that the start of engagement by the SDF and their “unconditional commitment” to the March 10, 2025 and Jan. 18, 2026 understandings is “of critical importance” to achieving lasting stability in Syria. The source added that Turkey will continue to support Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, as well as counterterrorism operations.
On Tuesday, the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic announced that it had reached a mutual understanding with the SDF on a number of issues related to the future of al-Hasakah province. Syria’s Defense Ministry also announced a four-day ceasefire in line with the understanding.
Despite the ceasefire, the ministry said the SDF targeted Syrian Arab Army positions more than 35 times on the first day of the truce, resulting in 11 soldiers martyred and more than 25 wounded.
