U.S. Foreign Relations Committee: Syria’s liberation paves the way for a better future

Washington, Dec. 9 (SANA) U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch and committee member Jeanne Shaheen said Monday, that the first anniversary of Syria’s liberation, is an extraordinary achievement that recalls the victory of freedom over tyranny and offers hope for greater peace across the Middle East.

“Today marks one year since the overthrow of the al-Assad regime,” the two senators said in a joint statement, adding that “the resilience of the Syrian people, together with U.S. sanctions imposed on Assad, brought an end to the regime.”

They added: “We call for lifting the Caesar Act sanctions, which date back to the Assad era and are included in the annual defense bill, and we affirm our commitment to achieving stability and prosperity in Syria.”
