UN Security Council to visit Syria in first-ever trip

Damascus, Dec. 3 (SANA) Representatives of the United Nations Security Council are set to arrive in Syria on Thursday in what will be the body’s first official visit to the country, coinciding with the first anniversary of Syria’s liberation and the fall of the deposed regime.

During the visit, Security Council members are expected to hold meetings with Syrian officials, representatives of Syrian civil society, and committees responsible for fact-finding investigations into recent events in the coastal region and the province of Sweida. The delegation will also meet with Najat Rochdi, Deputy UN Special Envoy for Syria.

A Syrian official source told SANA that the visit comes amid growing international recognition of Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and its ability to independently lead the process of national recovery. The source added that the visit could help restore public trust in the Security Council after years during which Syrians suffered from crimes committed by the deposed regime.

Slovenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samuel Žbogar — whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council — had previously stated that the visit aims to send a message of support to Syria, expressing hope that it would strengthen Syrians’ confidence in the United Nations.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states, including five permanent members — the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China — and ten non-permanent members: Sierra Leone, South Korea, Panama, Pakistan, Guyana, Greece, Algeria, Slovenia, Denmark, and Somalia.

The Security Council is one of the UN’s principal organs, alongside the General Assembly, the Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, and the Economic and Social Council.
