Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi, said on Monday that the Syrian delegation voted in favor of the new draft resolution on the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, including the paragraphs related to Syria.
“This vote reflects support for the language of the resolution, which acknowledged the active engagement and cooperation of the new Syrian government,” Olabi, speaking before the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security in New York, added.
He affirmed that the resolution is a remarkable step towards affirming the suffering our people endured because of misinformation. “Today, we have succeeded in delivering justice to the Syrian people and enabling them to breathe freely once again.”
“We thank Poland and all the countries that supported the Syrian people’s stance. We look to the future with optimism, hoping the resolution will expand in reflecting the truth and clarifying the positive developments expected on the ground, while acknowledging the Syrian people’s suffering from the scourge of chemical weapons,” Olabi said.
He added “We look forward to the support of the international community in addressing this burden we have inherited and suffered from, while risking our lives to rid Syria and the global community of it.”
The Syrian diplomat went on to say that early engagement in discussions on the draft resolution for the committee’s upcoming session will allow us to reflect the positive developments expected on the ground — developments we believe in and are working to make a reality.
“We emphasize the importance of presenting a more comprehensive and accurate image of the major challenges and risks facing the mission to eliminate the potential remnants of the inherited chemical program, highlighting the exceptional nature of this task,” Olabi added.
He stressed that Syria is satisfied with opening a new chapter of cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), marking the beginning of a genuine partnership.
“Syria remains committed to its positive engagement in fulfilling its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, and calls on the international community to support its efforts to accelerate the final elimination of any potential remnants of the chemical weapons program inherited from the era of the deposed regime,” Olabi concluded.
