Turkey to begin training 49 Syrian military cadets under bilateral defense agreement

The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that 49 Syrian military students will begin their training tomorrow at Turkish military academies, as part of a joint defense cooperation initiative aimed at strengthening Syria’s security and defense capabilities.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ankara, ministry spokesperson Zeki Aktürk stated that the training program falls under the “Joint Memorandum of Understanding on Training and Consultancy” signed between Turkey and Syria on August 13.

The agreement outlines a framework for sustained military collaboration, including capacity-building, technical support, and institutional development.

According to the ministry, the Syrian cohort includes 10 cadets from the land forces, 18 from the navy, and 21 from the air force, all scheduled to commence training on Friday.

Earlier this month, Syrian Defense Minister Lieutenant General Murhaf Abu Qasra met with the delegation of officer cadets assigned to Turkey and Saudi Arabia. During the meeting, he expressed Syria’s appreciation for the constructive cooperation shown by both countries in hosting the students and for the commitment of their military institutions to knowledge exchange and capacity development.

The August agreement between Damascus and Ankara marks a significant step in rebuilding Syria’s military infrastructure and enhancing regional security. It aims to modernize the Syrian Arab Army’s structure and institutions, while fostering deeper strategic ties between the two nations.
