Qatar has renewed its call for the creation of a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East, describing the move as increasingly urgent amid growing global security concerns.
Speaking before the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, Khalid Al-Mansouri, a member of Qatar’s delegation to the 80th session of the assembly, warned that the proliferation of nuclear weapons poses grave risks to humanity and future generations.
“The spread of nuclear weapons remains one of the most pressing threats to international peace and security,” Al-Mansouri said, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA). “Their continued development and the threats to use them only deepen global tensions and endanger regional stability,” he added.
He emphasized that advancing nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts is essential to achieving lasting peace, arguing that the possession of such weapons worsens conflicts and fuels insecurity worldwide.
Al-Mansouri urged countries in the Middle East to work toward regional and international agreements that strengthen good-neighborly relations, resolve disputes, and safeguard civilians.
