UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen

New York-SANA

UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has announced his intention to step down from his position.

“I have informed the Secretary-General of my intention to step down,” Pedersen told the Security Council, according to the Associated Press.

Pederson, aged 69, was appointed as UN Special Envoy for Syria in 2018, succeeding Staffan de Mistura.

He was tasked with implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which aims to find a political solution in Syria.

However, efforts to achieve this solution have repeatedly faltered.
