Arab League Council Reaffirms Support for Syria

Cairo, SANA – The Arab League Council, at the level of foreign ministers, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria, and condemned the Israeli incursions, which constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter and international resolutions.

In the decisions and recommendations adopted at the end of its 164th ordinary session, the Council stressed the continued engagement of the Syrian Arab Republic in joint Arab action after resuming its seat in the Arab League, affirming the importance of strengthening Syrian participation in the League’s mechanisms to promote collective Arab cooperation and address current regional challenges.

The Council also welcomed Arab and international humanitarian and relief contributions aimed at alleviating the suffering of Syrian civilians and providing medical and food aid. It affirmed its support for Arab and international efforts to eradicate terrorist hotbeds that threaten the security and stability of Syria and the region.

The ministers reiterated their support for Syria’s legal claim for the full return of the occupied Syrian Arab Golan up to the line of 4 June 1967, based on the principles of the peace process founded on Security Council resolutions 242, 338, and 497, as well as the principle of land for peace.

The Council reaffirmed that the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan since 1967 constitutes a continuing threat to peace and security in the region.

The participants condemned the incursion by Israel, the occupying Power, into Syrian territories located in the area of separation of forces between the two sides, as well as into a series of sites adjacent to Mount Hermon, in the governorates of Quneitra, Damascus Countryside, and Daraa, which constitutes a further occupation of Syrian territories in violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel, and a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and relevant international resolutions.

The Council underlined the importance of the continued role of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in monitoring Israeli violations, and the need for all parties concerned to fully respect the provisions of the agreement until Israel’s complete withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan.
