UN calls for increased urgent funding to meet humanitarian needs in southern Syria

Damascus, SANA – The United Nations called on donors to urgently increase support and funding to meet humanitarian needs in Sweida province, stressing that it is working to mobilize resources and enhance efforts to meet these needs.

In a statement on Thursday, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdel Mawla, expressed his appreciation to the Syrian government for its support and facilitation of his visit to Sweida, indicating that it allowed the UN delegation to assess the humanitarian situation on the ground and communicate with affected communities, local officials, and civil society organizations.

Abdul Mawla pointed out that more than 190,000 people have been displaced, most of them in Sweida province, and are residing in schools, which raises concerns as the new school year approaches, stressing the importance of finding solutions that ensure children’s continued access to education without interruption.

He clarified that health services are under severe pressure, as hospitals and clinics face a severe shortage of essential medicines, while the medical staff works in difficult conditions and needs urgent support to continue saving lives.

Abdul Mawla articulated that the United Nations, in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, continues to send aid convoys, reaching more than 300,000 people, but the response is still restricted due to limited funding.
