Madrid, Sept. 21 (SANA)  Archaeological excavations in the city of Sasamón, in Spain’s northern province of Burgos, have uncovered a Roman kitchen dating back around 2,000 years, revealing details about food preparation and daily life during the period.

The University of Salamanca said in a statement published on its website that the discovery was made during excavations at the site of the Roman city of Segisamo.

The excavation project is being carried out by researchers from the University of Salamanca and the Institute of Archaeology of Mérida, affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council, under the supervision of José Manuel Costa García and Jesús García Sánchez.

Researchers found large vessels used for food storage, along with jugs, bowls and cooking pots. They also uncovered fragments of a small portable oven that was likely used for baking bread, as well as layers of ash, charcoal and remains of what may have been a hearth.

The room was built with rammed-earth walls placed on stone foundations, while its floor consisted of compacted earth laid over gravel. Researchers said the simple and practical construction materials matched the room’s function as a food preparation area.

The team continues to study the recovered artifacts, bones and food remains to learn more about the diet and daily habits of the inhabitants of the ancient city of Segisamo.
