Berlin, Sept. 5 (SANA) Hackers published large amounts of data stolen from the Berlin state government on the dark web on Friday, after the deadline they had set to respond to their demand for a 2-million-euro ransom expired.
The German News Agency (DPA) reported that the hacking group known as “Rhysida” carried out its threat to publish the data, estimated at around 5.8 terabytes, after the deadline expired today. The agency noted that investigators have not yet been able to determine the actual volume of data that was published.
The agency explained that the stolen data includes approximately 1.44 million files, comprising personal files, fine proceedings, and payslips, in addition to confidential documents related to parliamentary committees, vulnerability analyses of Berlin’s drinking water supply system, as well as login credentials, passwords, administrative databases, and data from payment service providers.
Investigators from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office and the Federal Office for Information Security are participating in analyzing the attack and managing its repercussions, amid fears of significant risks to data protection and security should the entire package of stolen information be published.
On Aug.28, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner announced that the German capital had been subjected to extortion following a cyberattack that targeted the state government’s network on the 14th of the same month. The attack caused the inability to submit and process housing assistance applications for several days. He affirmed that the city authorities would not yield to the attackers’ demands.
