Washington, April 30 (SANA) A U.S. neurotechnology company, Motif Neurotech, has received FDA approval to begin human trials of a tiny, wireless brain implant intended to treat severe, treatment-resistant depression.

According to the Interesting Engineering website, the device, about the size of a berry, targets mood-related brain circuits using a programmable “digital brain therapy” approach. It is placed above the brain’s protective membrane without penetrating tissue and operates wirelessly without the need for batteries or implanted wires.

Researchers say this design could reduce surgical risks while enabling treatment to be tailored to each patient. The initial trials, which will take place at specialized medical centers in the U.S., will focus mainly on safety and early signs of effectiveness.

If successful, the technology could transform the field of psychiatry by shifting treatment toward precise, brain-circuit-based interventions rather than relying solely on medication.
