Moscow, March 4 (SANA) A team of young researchers in Moscow has developed a medicated chewing gum designed to help fight tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel, according to Sechenov University.
The gum contains an enzyme complex that works during chewing to break down dental plaque, reduce bacterial growth and improve breath, the university said. The project was reported by the Russian newspaper Gazeta.ru.
Researchers said the idea was developed to address long intervals between tooth brushings, when food particles can remain on teeth for hours and allow bacteria to grow and contribute to decay.
According to the developers, regular use of the gum could have a cumulative protective effect on teeth, helping strengthen enamel even when the product is not used continuously.
The innovation was presented at the Skolkovo Innovation Center. Production of the gum is expected to begin in Russia soon, researchers said, adding that the product is intended to complement regular brushing rather than replace it.
