Study warns heavy smartphone use may raise risk of early eye damage

Belgrade, May 16 (SANA) A recent study has warned that excessive use of smartphones and screens among young people may increase health risks affecting the eyes and nervous system, including a potential long-term risk of early cataracts.

The research, reported by Russian newspaper Izvestia, was conducted by cardiologist Branislav Bogunović at the University of Belgrade. It found that prolonged screen exposure can strain the nervous system, while eye fatigue and related factors may contribute to cataract development later in life.

The study identified sleep disruption, chronic stress, and sustained digital engagement as key risk factors. While cardiovascular disease remains rare among young people, researchers noted isolated cases of high blood pressure, with behavioral factors such as fatigue and poor sleep patterns seen as more significant concerns.

It concluded that younger generations are generally more health-conscious than previous ones, but are increasingly vulnerable to digital dependency, with possible early health effects emerging as early as age 30.
