Algiers, Jan. 28 (SANA) Algerian authorities on Wednesday announced the suspension of classes at all educational levels for Tuesday and Wednesday in most parts of the country, as part of precautionary measures ahead of a strong storm accompanied by high winds expected to reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
Algerian Ministry of Education said in a statement issued Tuesday that the decision was taken “based on an urgent dispatch from the Ministry of Interior and the meteorological services regarding a special weather bulletin warning of strong winds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour.”
According to the national meteorological services, the weather alert covers 52 of Algeria’s 69 provinces, most of them in the northern part of the country, where about 80 percent of the population resides.
The Civil Defense Authority urged citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents, particularly after a week of heavy rainfall that caused flooding in several areas, including the capital Algiers and Tipaza, and resulted in the deaths of a man in his sixties and a young girl.
Algeria’s national carrier, Air Algérie, announced the postponement of several flights scheduled for Wednesday due to strong winds.
Separately, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said all sporting activities scheduled for the coming weekend have been suspended, in line with instructions issued by the relevant authorities amid the severe weather conditions.
