Head of the Syrian Ports Authority: Tartus Port agreement will create a qualitative leap in trade

Damascus,SANA-Qutaiba Badawi, Head of the General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports in Syria, clarified that signing the agreement with DP World (Dubai Ports World) to develop the Port of Tartus falls within a national plan to enhance both the infrastructure and superstructure of all Syrian ports.

Bedawi said in an interview with the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya channel: “Since the beginning of 2025, we began coordinating consultations with several specialized companies to develop the ports of Latakia and Tartus. In this context, the first contract was signed with the French company CMA CGM to develop the container terminal at the port of Latakia. Today, an agreement has been reached with DP World to expand and operate the port of Tartus,”

He noted that this contract will bring a qualitative leap in maritime transport in Syria.

Badawi explained that the partnership with DP World came after a thorough evaluation, as the company is considered one of the leading firms in port development worldwide. It has extensive experience in developing infrastructure and maritime equipment, as well as global commercial relations, which will help enhance the shipping and loading activity at the Port of Tartous.

The head of the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports stressed the importance of upgrading and strengthening the capabilities of Syrian ports to meet the demands of both the local and international markets.

He pointed out that Syria holds a uniquely strategic position that supplies the Iraqi, Lebanese, and Jordanian markets, and serves as a key transit hub toward Gulf countries, Asia, and Europe—underscoring the vital need to modernize and develop Syria’s ports.
