Poet al-Shaer assassinated in Sweida, so-called “National Guard” blamed for the act

Sweida, Dec.15 ( SANA) Poet and activist, Anwar Fawzat al-Shaer, was killed last night after being shot by an unknown gunman in front of his home in the village of Bousan in the eastern Sweida countryside.

Local sources said that outlaw groups called the “National Guard,” linked to Hikmat al-Hijri, were behind the assassination due to the poet’s criticism of these militias and their practices.

Medical sources indicated that the poet arrived at the National Hospital in Sweida city already deceased, having sustained three gunshot wounds, one of them in the head.

The poet’s family strongly condemned the crime, stating in a statement Monday that the heinous killing contradicts religious and humanitarian values and national norms, and constitutes an attack on the security and unity of society.

The family said that they have initial information regarding the circumstances of the incident, emphasizing their rejection of the rhetoric of betrayal and hatred, and the logic of the law of the jungle, and affirming that freedom of opinion is a fundamental and guaranteed right.
