Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh called for the immediate and unconditional release of Hamza al-Ammarin, a Civil Defense official abducted during the Sweida incidents.
In a post on the X platform on Friday, al-Saleh said: “It has been three difficult months since the abduction of our colleague al-Ammarin, who was on his way to assist in evacuating a UN mission. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of al-Ammarin and all abducted persons, and for ensuring the protection of humanitarian workers in accordance with international humanitarian law and human rights principles.”
Al-Saleh cautioned that the continued abduction of Hamza al-Ammarin by armed groups in Sweida “constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law” and undermines the principles of neutral and independent humanitarian action aimed at protecting lives and assisting civilians without discrimination.
Communication with al-Ammarin was lost on July 16 while he was carrying out an evacuation mission for a UN team in Sweida Province.
