Hama, SANA- The Civil Defense announced Thursday that most wild fires near the town of Deir Shamil in the western Hama countryside were brought under control.

Director of Civil Defense in Hama Governorate, Mohammad al-Sheikh Qaddour, told SANA that firefighting teams, in cooperation with forestry brigades and local volunteers, “succeeded in stopping the spread of the fire in most areas of the large forest fire broke out yesterday evening” near the town of Deir Shamil in the western Hama countryside.

“Teams continue work to extinguish some of the burning areas”, he added, despite terrain difficulties in the mountainous areas.

The Civil Defense official added that trucks are working on opening fire lines in several areas to speed up response operations and reach the hotspots of the fires.

Western Hama countryside witnessed several large forest fires last week, which continued for days before being brought under control.
