Lattakia countryside faces major challenges after the wildfires sweeping the region

Lattakia, SANA-Residents of the town of Qastal Maaf town in Lattakia countryside faced significant challenges following the fires that swept through the area, burning vast areas of agricultural and forest land and causing extensive damage to infrastructure, particularly basic services such as water and electricity.

Syrian Civil Defense Director Mounir Mustafa told SANA reporter that the fires have ravaged approximately 16,500 hectares of lands in the province, including lands planted with fruit trees that are a major source of income for the region’s residents, causing significant losses to the agricultural sector.

For her part, the mayor of Qastal, Maaf Mays Mulla Wali, explained that the damage included the water network, which had originally been stopped since 2012. At that time, residents resorted to emergency solutions, as they extended hoses from the mountain to the houses, but they were completely burned during the recent fires, which led to a complete water outage for several days.

Residents appealed to relevant authorities and civil society organizations to take the initiative to rehabilitate infrastructure and provide agricultural and service support to enable residents to return, especially since the proximity of fires to homes has caused the displacement of many families.
