Damascus, June 15 (SANA) Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Mohammed Yassin Hourieh, discussed with representatives of Sami Rock Company, in the presence of officials from the General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources, the implementation of a memorandum of understanding to invest in an oil shale site in Khanasser area in northern Syria for the production of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer.

The meeting held on Monday, addressed plans to conduct a comprehensive geological survey of the site to obtain accurate data on the distribution and characteristics of oil shale formations, supporting the preparation of technical and investment studies required for the project.

Discussions also covered the selection of locations for the plant and landfill, mechanisms for securing phosphate supplies from mines to meet production requirements, and investment and industrial opportunities related to mineral resources. These include the production of rock wool from oil shale, studies for caustic soda and chlorine projects, and the use of marble in value-added industries.

Under the patronage of the Ministries of Energy and Economy and Industry, the General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s Sami Rock on April 20, 2026, to launch a project utilizing oil shale in the production of diammonium phosphate fertilizer.

Sami Rock specializes in mining operations, geological surveying and exploration, well and tunnel drilling, heavy equipment trading, and the implementation of mining and semi-mining projects in line with international standards and advanced technologies.
