Pedersen welcomes lifting of US economic sanctions on Syria

New York, SANA – The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, described the US move to lift a significant portion of economic sanctions on Syria as “an important step towards recovery, stability, and building a better future.”

Pederson stressed, as reported by the UN News website on Tuesday, the importance of giving the Syrian people a real opportunity to rebuild their country.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric also welcomed the US move, saying in his press conference today: “We have emphasized, and continue to emphasize, the importance of ensuring full use of all sanctions relief measures, and providing financial support and resources in conjunction with their easing.”
