Washington, Sept. 26 (SANA) Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to pursue a more stable relationship based on mutual respect and reciprocity, while the two countries established a communication channel to address incidents involving artificial intelligence.
The agreements emerged from Xi’s two-day state visit to Washington, which concluded Friday and included meetings with Trump at the White House.
China’s Xinhua news agency reported that Xi said the visit had added new substance to the development of China-U.S. relations and produced mutually beneficial economic and trade outcomes.
Xi said the two countries should respect their differences, deepen mutual understanding, expand cooperation and manage disagreements appropriately to promote stable and sustainable relations.
Trump described the visit as constructive and successful and expressed an interest in maintaining close communication with Xi and working together on the direction of bilateral relations.
Artificial intelligence was among the issues discussed during the visit. According to the White House information cited by AFP, Washington and Beijing agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for handling AI-related incidents and launch a dialogue on “superintelligence” to exchange views on the technology’s risks and benefits.
Xi stressed that China and the United States share responsibility for developing and managing AI in ways that serve the public interest and keep the technology under human oversight.
The Trump administration has made maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence a central element of its technology policy, emphasizing innovation and reduced regulatory barriers.
The AI agreement follows a proposal by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for a mechanism allowing Washington and Beijing to notify each other about AI incidents involving national security, with the aim of increasing transparency between the two countries.
Xi said during the visit that he was confident China and the United States, as major powers, could find an appropriate way to coexist in a new era.
The White House said Xi’s state visit concluded Friday after a program that included official talks and events in Washington involving Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, and Trump and first lady Melania Trump.
