New York, Sept. 2 (SANA) The United Nations has called for more funding for humanitarian operations in Sudan, warning that a major shortfall is limiting efforts to provide comprehensive assistance as the country’s conflict continues to drive widespread humanitarian needs.
The UN’s humanitarian appeal for Sudan is only 41% funded this year, with about $1.2 billion received out of the $2.9 billion required, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Tuesday.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners reached 12.3 million people across Sudan with at least one form of assistance between January and July 2026, Dujarric said, according to UN News.
However, only 2.2 million people — about 18% of those reached — received assistance across multiple sectors, highlighting the impact of funding shortages on efforts to meet humanitarian needs.
Dujarric urged all parties to protect civilians and allow the safe, rapid and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, leaving thousands dead and forcing millions from their homes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.
