Tokyo, Aug. 23 (SANA) At least 37 people were injured after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday, shaking Tokyo and surrounding areas, officials said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was centered in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 68 kilometers. No tsunami threat was issued.

Officials reported 15 injuries in Tokyo, nine in Saitama, eight in Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki.

The agency also detected long-period seismic waves capable of shaking high-rise buildings across Tokyo.

A water pipe ruptured in Tokyo’s Koto ward shortly after the quake, flooding part of a road, though it was unclear whether the incident was related. Elevators also temporarily stopped at several locations, trapping people inside.

The agency urged residents to remain cautious about another moderate earthquake over the next week. Japan lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is frequently affected by earthquakes and volcanic activity
