UNESCO names Beijing World Capital of Architecture for 2029

Paris, , Aug. 5 (SANA) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced on Wednesday that it has selected the Chinese capital Beijing as the World Capital of Architecture for 2029, recognizing its rich architectural heritage and pioneering vision in sustainable urban development.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany said following the announcement that “the selection of Beijing reflects confidence in its ability to launch a new international dialogue on the role of architecture in improving people’s lives and preserving heritage for future generations.”

He noted that the city combines exceptional architectural heritage, dynamic urban transformation and a forward-looking vision.

In a statement published on its official website, UNESCO said Beijing was selected for its ability to harmonize one of the world’s richest architectural legacies with urban renewal projects, demonstrating how heritage, innovation and community life can be integrated to build more resilient and sustainable cities.

The organization said the Chinese capital will organize, under the theme “Returning to Balance,” a year-long program in 2029 featuring exhibitions, conferences and educational and cultural events aimed at promoting international dialogue on the role of the built environment in creating more inclusive, sustainable and people-centered cities.

UNESCO affirmed that the selection of Beijing reflects its joint commitment with the International Union of Architects to making architecture, culture and sustainable urban development central pillars of international cooperation, following the conclusion of the 2026 UIA World Congress of Architects hosted by Barcelona, Spain.

The World Capital of Architecture program, launched by UNESCO in cooperation with the International Union of Architects, is awarded every three years to the host city of the union’s World Congress, with the aim of highlighting the role of architecture, urban planning and culture in achieving sustainable development.

Previous cities to hold the title include Rio de Janeiro in 2020, Copenhagen in 2023 and Barcelona in 2026.
