Islamabad, June 23 (SANA) Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Tuesday that a recently reached memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran could pave the way for a broader peace agreement following ongoing technical negotiations, helping strengthen regional and international stability.
Speaking before parliament, Sharif said he and Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir had participated in high-level negotiations hosted by Switzerland between Washington and Tehran. He said Pakistan’s role in efforts to de-escalate tensions had received international recognition.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistani diplomatic efforts, coordinated with Qatar, helped bring Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table despite heightened regional tensions. He added that Israeli military operations in Lebanon had temporarily delayed the launch of the Swiss-hosted talks.
Dar also said that during a recent quadrilateral meeting in Cairo involving Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Türkiye, the participating foreign ministers agreed to reactivate coordination among a group of Arab and Islamic countries in support of the Palestinian cause.
According to Pakistani officials, the United States and Iran signed the memorandum of understanding on June 18 with the aim of addressing outstanding issues, including maintaining the cessation of military operations and ensuring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
A new round of technical talks was held in Geneva on Sunday, where negotiators reported progress on several key issues, according to officials involved in the discussions.
