London, June 22 (SANA) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he is stepping down as leader of the ruling Labour Party after less than two years in the role, amid falling approval ratings and growing political pressure.
Speaking outside Downing Street, Starmer said that “every decision I have taken has been aimed at putting the country I love first,” confirming his resignation from the party leadership.
He said a leadership contest for the Labour Party will be launched in July, while he will remain prime minister until a successor is elected, expected to take office in September.
Starmer’s decision follows mounting calls for his resignation after significant Labour losses in local elections in May, which intensified pressure on his leadership both inside and outside the party.
