Damascus, June 17 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington could resume military action against Iran if future negotiations fail, despite an expected memorandum of understanding aimed at extending a ceasefire and creating conditions for broader talks between the two sides.
Speaking at the G7 summit in Evian, France, Trump described the anticipated memorandum as a “good, strong agreement” but stressed that it would not constitute a final settlement, according to AFP.
He warned that the United States would return to military action if Iran failed to meet what Washington considers acceptable conditions during the next phase of negotiations.
According to Reuters, the memorandum is expected to extend a ceasefire announced in April by 60 days, allowing additional time for negotiations on outstanding issues. Media reports said the understanding could include measures related to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian oil exports, alongside renewed Iranian commitments regarding its nuclear program.
Trump said the agreement would help prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and noted that oil prices had fallen and financial markets had responded positively following reports of the understanding.
However, major issues remain unresolved, including Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, its ballistic missile program and other regional concerns, according to Reuters and other media reports.
G7 leaders welcomed the U.S.-Iran understanding and voiced support for continued diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
A formal signing ceremony is expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday, although analysts say the current understanding represents a preliminary step toward a broader agreement rather than a final resolution.
