Berlin, 18 May (SANA) German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Monday that the Group of Seven remains the appropriate forum for discussing ways to achieve a lasting end to the Israeli-Iranian conflict, warning that tensions around the Strait of Hormuz pose a serious threat to the global economy.
According to Reuters, Klingbeil said the conflict, along with restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, risks disrupting international energy flows, supply chains and financial markets.
“Our path as Europeans remains clear: we choose cooperation over confrontation,” Klingbeil said ahead of a meeting of G7 finance ministers in Paris. He stressed Germany’s commitment to open trade, strategic partnerships and the rule of law.
He added that recent geopolitical crises had reinforced the need for Germany and Europe to strengthen economic resilience, particularly in the areas of raw materials, energy security and critical supply networks.
Klingbeil is expected to join finance ministers and central bank officials from the G7 in Paris on Monday and Tuesday. He is also scheduled to hold talks with counterparts from Brazil, India, South Korea and Kenya as part of efforts to expand international economic partnerships.
The remarks came amid renewed political and military escalation in the Middle East following reports by US media on Sunday that President Donald Trump plans to meet senior national security advisers to discuss possible military options regarding Iran.
