Tehran, Mar. 1 (SANA) – Iran announced Sunday the formation of an interim leadership council to manage state affairs following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes.
According to Iranian media reports, the council includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, and Guardian Council representative Alireza Arafi.
Pezeshkian said the council officially assumed its duties starting Sunday in accordance with Article 111 of the Iranian constitution, which outlines procedures for governance in the event of the supreme leader’s vacancy.
The announcement comes as the United States and Israel continue, for a second consecutive day, coordinated strikes on Iranian targets using precision weapons launched from air, land, and sea. The attacks reportedly killed several senior Iranian officials, including Khamenei, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the defense minister, and the armed forces chief of staff.
Iran responded with missile strikes against Israel, which Israeli authorities said killed 10 people and injured more than 100. Iranian attacks also targeted several Gulf states and Jordan, causing casualties and injuries in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait.
