Geneva, Feb.14 (SANA)-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that approximately 150,000 Afghan refugees have returned to their country from Iran and Pakistan since last January.
The already high number of returnees this year is worrying, given the harsh winter with very low temperatures and heavy snowfall across most of the country,” AFP quoted UNHCR representative in Afghanistan Arafat Jamal as saying during a UN press conference in Geneva.
Jamal emphasized that the scale of this return has plunged Afghanistan into a deeper crisis, as the country continues to suffer from a deteriorating humanitarian situation, a struggling economy, and frequent natural disasters. He expressed concern about the ability of returning Afghans to remain in their country.
A survey conducted by the UNHCR among returning Afghans revealed that they face difficulties finding employment and that many lack documentation.
