Brussels, Feb. 10 (SANA) The European Union condemned on Monday new settlement measures approved by the Israeli occupation authorities in the West Bank, stressing that they constitute a “clear violation” of international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
European Union spokesman for foreign affairs and security policy Anouar El Anouni told reporters that “this move is another step in the wrong direction”, emphasizing that the EU does not recognize Israeli control over the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.
He added that the annexation of West Bank territory is “illegal under international law,” calling on Israel to halt policies that threaten the prospects for establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The EU statements came a day after the Israeli government announced new measures aimed at changing the legal status of the West Bank, a move that observers said was an attempt to consolidate Israeli control over the occupied territories.
