NEW YORK, Jan 28 (SANA) The United Nations said on Tuesday that the situation in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic, with more than one million Palestinians in need of urgent assistance and sustainable solutions to meet their basic needs.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the United Nations and its humanitarian partners provided tents, plastic sheeting, insulation materials and blankets to more than 7,500 families last week. Child protection partners also distributed winter clothing to about 1,400 children across the Gaza Strip, according to UN News.
“Over the weekend, another child died from hypothermia, bringing the total number of child deaths linked to cold weather to 10,” OCHA said.
Earlier this month, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory warned of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, saying strong winds had uprooted many tents sheltering displaced people and that residents face the risk of death if urgent aid does not enter the area.
