Brussels, Jan. 21 (SANA) The European Union’s Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, has condemned the Israeli authorities’ recent raid and demolition of the UNRWA complex in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.
In a statement reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Lahbib described the action as a violation of the UN Convention on the Privileges and Immunities, which requires member states to protect and respect the inviolability of UN facilities. She called on Israel to immediately halt such actions.
Lahbib highlighted the EU’s strong support for the United Nations and the rules-based international system, of which UNRWA is a vital part. She emphasized that UN agencies play a key role in maintaining global peace and stability.
The commissioner also reaffirmed the EU’s political and financial backing for UNRWA, stressing that the agency’s work is critical for preserving conditions conducive to peace and security. She warned that any disruption of UNRWA’s operations could have serious humanitarian, political, social, and economic consequences.
Israeli forces raided the UNRWA headquarters in Sheikh Jarrah on Tuesday, demolishing several buildings.
