Brussels, Jan. 6 (SANA) European Council President António Costa is set to make an official visit to Syria later this week, the Council announced.
According to a statement on the Council’s website, Costa will attend an EU–Jordan summit on Thursday, January 8, before traveling to Syria accompanied by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Paula Binho, spokesperson for von der Leyen, said the European Commission President will visit Syria for the first time since the fall of the deposed regime, as part of a Middle East tour that also includes Jordan and Lebanon.
In September, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met with Costa and von der Leyen on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in the presence of Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.
The European Union has reiterated its support for the Syrian people’s recovery and stressed its backing of Syria while condemning any foreign interventions that could threaten the country’s stability.
