Death toll rises to 502 in Indonesia floods, over 500 missing

Jakarta, Dec. 01 (SANA) At least 502 people have died and 508 remain missing following severe floods and landslides caused by heavy cyclonic rains on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, the country’s National Disaster Management Agency reported Monday.

The previous day’s toll had stood at 442 dead. Authorities said the floods and landslides were triggered by unusually intense rainfall, worsened by climate change, which has increased the frequency and severity of storms in the region.

Flooding and related disasters across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia have killed more than 1,000 people in less than a week, highlighting the growing risks from extreme weather events in Southeast Asia.
