Switzerland and UNICEF sign agreement to improve water services for Syrian refugees

Amman, Dec. 01 (SANA)  The Embassy of Switzerland in Jordan and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) signed a new agreement Monday to enhance access to water and sanitation services for vulnerable children and families in Syrian refugee camps and host communities in Jordan.

Jordan’s Petra news agency quoted UNICEF Deputy Representative Shairose Mawji as saying, “The total contribution under the agreement amounts to 2.85 million Swiss francs.” She added that the funding will support national systems that provide sustainable, climate-resilient water and sanitation services in both refugee camps and host communities.

Mawji described Switzerland as “a key partner in our efforts to ensure every child grows up in a safe and healthy environment,” noting that the renewed collaboration will strengthen water and sanitation systems and improve the lives of the most vulnerable children and families.

Eileen Hofstetter, Head of Cooperation at the Swiss Embassy, reaffirmed her country’s long-term commitment to UNICEF, saying Switzerland will continue supporting Jordan in meeting the needs of Syrian refugees while advancing development initiatives in water and sanitation, education, protection, and livelihoods.

Earlier this year, on July 30, UNICEF Jordan and the UK Foreign Office signed a separate agreement worth 1.5 million pounds to sustain water services for over 100,000 refugees in Zaatari and Azraq camps.
