Heading to Damascus, Germany’s foreign minister stresses continued support for Syria

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed his country’s determination to continue supporting Syria and its people to enable them to shape their future.

The minister said ahead of his visit to Damascus on Thursday, “Syria faces immense challenges, and Germany supports its efforts to achieve security and stability by lifting all economic sanctions imposed on it.” He added in a statement released by the Regional German Information Centre that Berlin sought to support Syria on various levels, including humanitarian aid, support for the removal of mines and ammunition, the rapid expansion of the German embassy in Damascus, and investments German companies wish to make in Syria.

The German Foreign Minister stressed that what happens in Syria directly affects both the European Union and Germany, given Syria’s strategic location. “Syria’s stability is in Germany’s interest, which is why we also want Syria to rise economically as quickly as possible,” he added.

The German Foreign Minister pointed out that during the war, more than a million Syrians sought refuge in Germany, many of whom found not only protection but also a new homeland. Some are now considering returning to Damascus to contribute to rebuilding their country. He expressed his hope to strengthen the relationship between Syria and Germany.
