Russian Presidency Welcomes Trump’s remark on New START Treaty

The Russian presidency welcomed Monday U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement regarding President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend the New START treaty on nuclear arms limits, calling it as like “a good idea”.

According to TASS news agency, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “The position expressed by President Donald Trump is encouraging,” describing it as a positive sign of potential U.S. support for the Russian initiative.

Peskov clarified that Moscow has not yet received any official signals through diplomatic channels from Washington regarding the proposal, and the Kremlin is still awaiting concrete steps from the American side.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that extending the New START nuclear arms control treaty with Russia by one year “sounds like a good idea.”

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin effectively proposed extending the treaty, that is set to expire next February, by one year. He said his country is prepared to continue adhering to the central numerical limits if the United States does the same.
