Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stressed that her meeting with President Ahmad al-Sharaa was an “opportunity to reaffirm Italy’s support” for the reconstruction of a stable and sovereign Syria.
In a post on X, Meloni said: “I met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa as part of my participation in the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly.”
“This meeting provided an opportunity to confirm Italy’s support for the reconstruction of a stable and sovereign Syria, including through investments by Italian companies in various sectors of mutual interest,” the Italian prime minister added.
Meloni said that she also emphasized the importance of the commitments made by the Italian government to development cooperation activities in the country.
She clarified that during the discussion, she “spoke about the need to integrate and protect all components of Syrian society, and the necessity of continuing efforts to ensure the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees.”
President al-Sharaa met with Meloni at the Italian mission in New York, in the presence of foreign minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.
