Abuja, SANA-Nigerian authorities announced that 31 people were killed when an overloaded boat capsized in a river in central Nigeria on Wednesday evening.
According to ABC News, Hussaini Issa of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the vessel, carrying 90 passengers, struck a tree trunk in the Borgu area of Niger State. So far, 31 bodies have been recovered and 50 people rescued, while search and rescue operations continue for the missing.
Boat accidents are common in Nigeria’s remote areas during the rainy season, often caused by overloading or poor vessel maintenance. Analysts note that many boats also operate without life jackets.
