UN Official: ISIS exploiting tensions to undermine security and stability in Syria

NEW YORK, SANA-Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov, has cautioned that ISIS remains active in Syria’s eastern desert, seeking to rebuild its capabilities by exploiting sectarian and separatist tensions, threatening efforts to restore security and stability.

UN counter-terrorism chief Vladimir Voronkov told the Security Council that dire conditions in northeastern camps, housing tens of thousands of women and children, risk fueling radicalization. He urged a comprehensive strategy that respects international law and human rights.

For her part, Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) at the United Nations, Natalia Gherman also stressed the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis in the camps. Meanwhile, Syrian security forces have intensified operations, dismantling ISIS cells in a bid to prevent the group’s resurgence and safeguard stability.
