Health Ministry, International Organizations discusses joint cooperation

Damascus, SANA-The agenda of the regular meeting held by the Syrian Ministry of Health with representatives of international organizations, UN agencies, and NGOs active in the health sector focused on the necessity for joint coordination to improve the health sector and enhance the quality of services provided to citizens.

The participants in the meeting discussed the work of the Directorate of Planning and International Cooperation, the Directorate of Primary Health Care, the Emergency and Ambulance Directorate, and blood banks

They explored mechanisms for managing health information and emphasized the importance of boosting mental health, psychosocial support, and coordinating the work of trauma and disability response teams.

Health Minister Dr. Musab al-Ali highlighted the importance of the meeting for communication and coordination, especially given the current challenges facing the health sector. He stressed the need to establish a strategic plan in cooperation with and supported by the organizations.

Dr. al-Ali explained that the ministry has developed a strategic plan during the current phase to achieve its targeted goals and to serve as a reference document. It aims to deliver healthcare based on specific priorities, maintain the provision of medical services, and ensure fairness in access to medical care.

For his part, WHO health sector co-coordinator Dr. Laurence Viehichima stressed the enormous needs of Syria’s health sector, noting that around 16 million people require health services. Despite the challenges, health sector partners have delivered more than 2.9 million treatment programs and over 5.9 million medical procedures from January to May of this year.

Director of Planning and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Zuhair Qarout, pointed to the major accomplishments made by the ministry since the liberation, including the development of health services in Damascus and its countryside.
